Developing Your Proposal

All Vermont middle and secondary grades teachers are warmly invited to submit a proposal for a Rowland Fellowship.

To be eligible, teachers must be currently practicing their profession in a Vermont school and work directly with students on a daily basis. The Rowland Foundation’s selection process does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identification, language, religion, (dis)ability, or national origin.

Application Timeline

Spring & Summer (Before applying)

  • Learn more about the Rowland Foundation
  • Explore past Fellowship projects
  • Gather information and ideas from your colleagues and students
  • Discuss your proposal idea with your principal
  • Register for an Info Session to discuss your idea with the Rowland Foundation Executive Director

September/October (Before Applying)

  • Register for an Info Session to discuss your idea with the Rowland Foundation Executive Director
  • Gather letters of support for your application
  • Attend the Rowland Annual Conference workshop for Fellowship candidates to develop your proposal

November/December

  • Schedule a consultation with a Rowland Senior Associate to receive feedback on your proposal

Commitment

The Rowland Fellowship is a two-year commitment to serve your school as a teacher on special assignment in partnership with your principal and your school’s Collaborative Work Group. Rowland Fellows also take turns hosting monthly day-long meetings of the Fellowship cohort at their respective schools. Click here to learn more.

Required Elements

Your Rowland Fellowship application will consist of the following elements:

  • A completed online application form, where you will provide information about yourself, your school community, and your proposed project.
  • A proposed budget: The anticipated expenses associated with you proposal, such as release from classroom teaching, travel to conferences, site visits, and meetings you wish convene with colleagues.
  • A Creative Digital Artifact: An opportunity to demonstrate or visualize the relationship between your teaching practice and the vision outlined in your proposal in a creative way, this artifact may be original video, a slide deck, a podcast, a blog post, an infographic, photography, artwork, music, or any other media, as long as it takes no more than 5-7 minutes to review in full.
  • Three Letters of Support: Strong letters of support solicited from the following members of your school community:
    • Your principal or head of school, demonstrating their endorsement of your proposal. This support is critical to the success of your application.
    • Your department chair, immediate supervisor, or another senior colleague.
    • Another person of your choice, such as a fellow teacher, a member of support staff, a student, school board member, or other member of your school community.
  • Superintendent Approval Form: Completed and signed by your superintendent to demonstrate support for your proposal from your school district.
  • Resumé: Please provide a current resumé for yourself, or if applying as a team, please provide a resumé for each team member.

Application Window

The Rowland Foundation will accept applications for the 2027 Cohort of Fellows from November 1 to December 31, 2026.  Please mail one copy of your complete application to our offices at: The Rowland Foundation, 47 Maple Street, Suite #200, Burlington, Vermont 05401. Applications must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2026 to be considered.
