Mentoring DEW Scholars

Bonnie Johnson-Aten is a veteran Vermont educator who has mentored and supported teachers and educational leaders of color throughout her career. In her current role as our DEW Mentor, Bonnie plans, coordinates and facilitates monthly affinity group meetings for our Rowland DEW Scholars, who are all aspiring educators of color pursuing licensure in Vermont. In addition to advising DEW Scholars on navigating predominantly white school settings around the state, Bonnie provides expert guidance in all aspects of the licensure process, from strategies for portfolios and Praxis exams, to effective classroom practices.

Bonnie retired in June 2025 as the Executive Director of School Leadership for the Burlington School District. Prior to that role, she served as Principal of Edmunds Middle School for 11 years, and previously held leadership positions as Assistant Principal at U-32 High School and House Director at Champlain Valley Union High School.

Bonnie’s experience extends beyond school-based leadership. She served as an Educational Policy Analyst during the administration of Governor Howard Dean, reflecting her strong understanding of the political and educational policy landscape. Her work at both the central office and school levels is marked by collaboration, clear communication, and effective management.

Bonnie has also contributed to education leadership at the state and national levels, serving as a board member of the Vermont Board of Education, the Vermont Principals’ Association Executive Committee, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). She currently works as a coach and mentor for educators, and serves on the board of the Vermont Association for Middle Level Education.
