The Fellowship
Each year the Rowland Foundation awards up to six Rowland Fellowships to Vermont middle grades and secondary school teachers.
The Rowland Foundation’s mission is to invest in Vermont teachers to positively change the culture and climate of schools. We welcome applications from classroom teachers of all disciplines, school counselors, special educators–all Vermont teachers who work directly with students in the middle or secondary grades are eligible to apply. Administrators, instructional coaches, coordinators, and program directors are not eligible.
Annual Conference
Vermont’s Largest Education Conference
The Rowland Foundation hosts the largest one-day educational conference in Vermont each fall at the University of Vermont. The Annual Rowland Conference is intended for educators, students, and community members interested in improving the culture and climate of schools.
Attendees will enjoy a keynote address, workshops, lunch, and refreshments throughout the day.
Rowland Resources

Deeper Learning for Democracy
The Rowland Foundation is pleased to announce the publication of Deeper Learning for Democracy: Realizing a New Vision for Public Education in Vermont authored by our 2023 Rowland Encore Grant Team: Andrew Jones (RF15), Jess DeCarolis (RF09), Gabriel Hamilton (RF15) & Michael Ruppel (RF17). The authors address our rapidly changing world, define deeper learning and how to create the right conditions for it to take root, and then provide the key actions necessary for deeper learning to unfold in school systems. We encourage you to use this resource to support “a different approach than the dominant paradigm of the last century.”

4 Filters for Digital Wellness
The Rowland Foundation is pleased to announce the publication of Digital Wellness: Building a Healthy Relationship with Technology, authored by our 2022 Rowland Encore Grant Team: Anne Bergeron (RF11), Carrie Felice (RF13), Sarah Ibson (RF13) & Lissa Knauss (RF18). We are proud of our Rowland Fellow authors’ approach, which is pragmatic and positive instead of shaming and blaming young people about their tech use. Instead of solely thinking in terms of “screen time”, the authors propose four filters to better understand the nature of our technology use, namely, asking, Is it Constructive? Mindful? Healthy? Kind?
The Rowland DEW Scholars
Are you an aspiring educator of color in Vermont working on your teacher’s license? If so, the Rowland Foundation wants to hear from you!
The Rowland Foundation believes that systemic change, the kind that can alter a school’s culture and enhance its climate for learning, is derived from visionary leadership within the school. Deep and lasting change of this kind cannot be mandated, downloaded, or implemented in a linear fashion — it must be co-constructed with all the members of a school community.

Rowland Women Leadership Retreat
The Rowland Women Leadership Retreat is an annual, multi-day gathering of Rowland Fellows who identify as women.
It is intended to provide an opportunity for Rowland women to unplug from the demands of work and family and share experiences and strategies to address the unique challenges they may face in the workplace.
Designed and led by Rowland Fellows, the retreat combines expert facilitation, shared physical activities, and communal meals to create a space for restoration and growth. Built on the strengths of the Rowland cohort experience and the larger Rowland network, the retreat is an affinity space where we recognize the invaluable contributions of women leaders to Vermont’s education landscape.
