Leadership Grant
A Rowland Leadership Grant (RLG) is open to all Rowland Fellows after the first two years of their fellowship.
The purpose of the RLG is to provide leadership opportunities to veteran Rowland Fellows to advance the work and mission of The Rowland Foundation. It is understood that recipients of a RLG will draw upon the expertise, skills, and wisdom of other Rowland Fellows in the planning and execution of the initiative or event for which funding is sought. Shared applications that include more than one Rowland Fellow or cohort year are strongly encouraged.
Starting on July 1st of each year, Rowland Fellows can submit directly to the Executive Director RLG applications that clearly link to the Rowland Foundation’s mission.
Application deadline is on a rolling basis based on available funds each year.
With a Rowland Leadership Grant, there are three grant levels for which a Rowland Fellow may apply:
Level One
Personal hours of investment: 10-15 hours ($500 stipend)
Examples: arranging a series of school site visits, facilitating a book study or discussion group series, organizing a social or special meeting for Rowland Fellows
Level Two
Personal hours of investment: 15-30 hours ($1000 stipend)
Examples: organizing & hosting a one-day mini-conference or retreat for Rowland Fellows
Level Three
Personal hours of investment: 30+ hours ($1500 stipend)
Examples: organizing a TED Talk, Pecha Kucha Night, or “Moth Story Hour”event, organizing an open conference or symposium, regional or statewide Fellowship project extensions
RLG Selection Process
The selection will be based on the following criteria:
- the vision of the applicant
- the timeliness of the initiative
- the number of people impacted by the grant
- the level of planning and detail demonstrated in the preliminary budget
- the degree to which the proposal advances the mission and work of The Rowland Foundation.
All RLG applications will be reviewed by the Executive Director and Senior Associates and will be awarded on a rolling basis for as long as funds remain available for that fiscal year. The Rowland Foundation currently budgets $12,000 per year for Rowland Leadership Grants.
The Executive Director will consider grant requests with total budgets of between $500 – $5,000 and also make the determination as to whether a request might fall between the levels listed above.
In addition to the Fellow’s stipend for leading the initiative, the preliminary budget should provide in as much detail as possible all anticipated expenses required to make the proposal a reality. Grant awards that involve several Rowland Fellows will be given priority.
The RF Leadership Grant provided me the opportunity to collaborate with a Rowland Fellow from another school and create something meaningful: a curated collection of stories about teaching and learning from across Vermont. The product (EdStory) was incredible, but the process of working with Rowland Fellows to tell meaningful stories – that was magical!
