The Twinfield Democracy Project is about changing the culture at Twinfield, and in schools all over Vermont, so that protecting and strengthening our democracy is paramount in educating our young people. It is clear to most of us that the country is more divided than ever. Increasingly, the hard discussions that are central to a government by the people and for the people are happening with less frequency, and with less civility. The TDP is all about teaching our students and our community members the skills needed to work together, from a place of empathy and understanding, to address the problems facing our country and world.
Christopher and his team are developing a number of initiatives to make this dream a reality. Beginning in 2025, Twinfield students will be able to earn a Seal of Civic Readiness on their diplomas so that they are recognized at graduation for taking on civic engagement projects and working hard to develop their proficiency at civics and government.
Twinfield is opening its doors to the community to find out what they want out of civics education in their public school. We are making important connections with town and state officials and planning an annual civics expo, in which those with power will come to speak with students about the issues that they see in the community and how they can use their offices to address those issues.
Through these efforts and others, the TDP is making Twinfield a place that will be synonymous with education that supports democracy.
